Overcoming Anxiety

Updated: Apr 9, 2019

WHERE IS IT COMING FROM?

Philippians 4:6 - be anxious for nothing.

There's a root cause giving it life; just like the root of a tree gives life to the leaves, and once disconnected, the leaves die. There is a root cause giving anxiety life and once the cause is tackled, the symptoms die along with it. Remember that as you think in your heart, so are you, therefore locate the open door and shut it tight.

Jesus cursed a fig tree in the bible and it withered up. Trace your thought pattern or feelings back to the point it changed and correct it; change your perspective. Give your cares to God because He cares for you. Trust that God loves you enough to handle every situation you give to Him. 1 Peter 5:7 - casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

"Trace your thought pattern or feelings back to the point it changed and correct it"

LOOK AT THE BIGGER PICTURE

Sometimes we focus on one isolated situation or thing without considering it as a whole.

When you look at the whole picture it is likely that you'll find seeds of hope and reasons to be grateful.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 - in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Be happy that some things didn't work out the way you wanted it to because, maybe if it did, it may have brought your downfall or issues you couldn't foresee, contain or handle at the time.

Proverbs 3:5-6 - Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do and he will show you which path to take.

God can see your destiny; He can see what is to come and He knows how to manage your life perfectly, trust Him!

Psalm 37:23 - The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.

THANKFUL HEART

Find reasons in your life to be grateful. Intentionally look for individual things to be grateful for. Maybe you have a good friend or friends, maybe you have a supportive family, or a job, a spouse, children, good health, able bodied, sound mind, an education, living in a peaceful country where there's no war, or you've been in deadly situations but you're still alive. Where there's life, there’s hope for a brighter day. Phil 4:8 - Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

Be aware of your thoughts and what your heart is meditating on. Don’t allow your mind to be society’s garbage bin or the devil’s playground.

Joyce Meyer says: ‘think good things on purpose.’ Proverbs 15:13 - A glad heart makes a happy face; a broken heart crushes the spirit.

David realised he felt down but he told himself that he will thank God and look unto God anyway; he encouraged himself in God. (1 Samuel 30:6)

FOCUS ON FAITH

Work on building up your faith in the One that is greater, more powerful and more able than you are. Our hope is in God because He's able to change things and has power enough to do so. We don’t hold back something good from those we love, how much more God- if he gave us His only Son, how much more will He freely give us all good things!

Proverbs 3:27-28 - Do not withhold good from those who deserve it when it’s in your power to help them. If you can help your neighbour now, don’t say, “Come back tomorrow, and then I’ll help you.”

Sometimes we must fight to keep our faith, peace and sanity.

Anxiety comes from fear and fear is a spirit to be rebuked. Don't accept it as part of your life.

2nd Timothy 1:7 - For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. Agree with God's Spirit; the Spirit of the word of God.

John 6:63 - It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.

FORGIVE YOURSELF BECAUSE GOD HAS FORGIVEN YOU

1 John 1:9 - But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.

Fight against doubt, guilt and shame. In Christ, you are forgiven of all your wrongs and mistakes and made new. Your slate is clean. Christ came to give you life, not death, and that life in abundance.
